How the status of your MPRN impacts your gas meter installation.

Your MPRN status indicates the current condition of your meter, which can fall into one of four main categories:

  • Live
  • Disconnected
  • New
  • Removed

If you’re unsure about your current gas meter status, you can reach out to the Meter Point Administration Service (MPAS) for assistance.

With an active meter, your gas setup is complete and ready for use. If you're satisfied with your meter type, you can now search for the best gas deals for your business.

If your meter is inactive, your current MPRN will not be reused because the connection has been removed. This status is known as "siteworks," which means you'll need to contact your network operator to arrange for a new meter.

You can find your network operator by clicking the button below. Once you have obtained your new MPRN, you can schedule a new gas meter installation with STS Energy.

For a brand new meter, your MPRN has been generated, but the pipes may not yet be installed. Your MPRN can be activated 3-4 weeks prior to the pipe installation.

If you have a new meter status, you can receive quotes from us by filling out our user-friendly meter installation form.

If your gas meter has been decommissioned, you will need to schedule a GT1 survey with your Distribution Network Operator (DNO).

A GT1 survey will provide details about your meter and determine whether the necessary infrastructure is in place to supply gas to your business.

How to read a commercial gas meter.

Once you’ve located and identified your business gas meter, you may want to take a reading. Your gas meter will be either imperial or metric. An imperial meter has four main numbers, while a metric meter has five. Here’s how to read each type of gas meter:

Dial Gas Meters: These are the most challenging to read. You’ll see a series of dials, each marked from 0 to 9. Read the numbers indicated by each pointer on the dials from left to right. If a pointer is between two numbers, note the lower number, unless it’s between 0 and 9, in which case you should record 9. Ignore any red dials, dials labeled ‘100 per rev,’ and the largest dial, usually located in the center.

Digital Meters: A standard digital meter displays a series of numbers on a screen. Simply note the numbers from left to right, ignoring any digits in red, printed zeroes, or any digits after a decimal point or space.

Smart Meters: With smart meters, you don’t need to worry about taking readings, as they are sent directly to your supplier. If you do need to take a reading, follow the instructions for digital meters.

Average cost of commercial gas meter installation.

The cost of installing a commercial gas meter can vary based on the size of your premises and the specific needs of your business.

For instance, if you operate in the hospitality sector, such as restaurants or hotels, your demand for a reliable gas supply may be higher compared to a business in the financial industry.

Smart Gas Meters

Installing a smart gas meter at your premises can offer more accurate readings and simplify monitoring of your gas consumption.

Your smart meter will automatically send readings to your supplier, eliminating the need for estimated billing and ensuring that you only pay for the gas you actually use.

General FAQs

When installing a new commercial gas meter, you will need your MPRN, which is the unique number that identifies your meter. This number can typically be found on a recent bill or on the meter itself.

When you begin your new meter installation with STS Energy, you can simply provide your postcode, and we can automatically locate your meter number for you.

If you do not have a connection at your premises, you will need to contact your Distribution Network Operator (DNO) before starting the installation process. The DNO can create a new connection and provide you with your MPRN. Once you have this set up, you can request quotes for new gas meter installation.

A Distribution Network Operator (DNO) is a company that owns and manages the gas infrastructure that connects your premises to the national grid.

DNOs cover specific regions of the UK, and the DNO for your property will depend on your location. If you need to set up a new connection, you will need to identify and contact your DNO.

In many instances, if you switch gas suppliers with STS Energy, you may qualify for a free gas meter installation.

When you consult with our team, they can offer guidance on the cost of your meter installation tailored to your specific needs. The total cost will depend on the type of meter you require and the current condition of your existing meter.

If you operate multiple sites, your business will likely have several gas meters, each with its own contracts and varying end dates. This can complicate the management of your gas usage and expenses.

Installing a multi-site business gas meter can significantly simplify your billing process. A multi-site meter can track your gas consumption across various locations, allowing you to consolidate your plans into a single contract for all your sites.
